Kell, the so called good Antari still works as a smuggler. But even then the author takes care to create them in shades of gray. One portrayed as good while the other as bad. While Kell at least has the illusion of being family to the Royals of his world, Holland doesn’t even have that. They’re literally the possessions of whoever rules their world because no one can afford to have the Antari free of control. Which is why both Kell and Holland are so valued in their respective worlds. The blood magic is the most powerful and difficult to perform. Almost everyone can have a bit of command over some or all of the elements but the Antari, besides being masters of wielding elemental magic can also use their blood to perform more intricate magic. Blood magic and elemental magic is different. They’re a dying breed and now only two remain - Kell and Holland who comes from White London. Kell, hailing from Red London is an Antari - one of the so called blood magicians who can travel between worlds and command elements. The home of Delilah Bard - badass thief and wannabe pirate. Then lastly, there’s the Grey London - where magic has been forgotten and only very few even care about it.Kell and the people of Arnes, as Red London is commonly known, worship magic. This is the London of our main character Kell. The Red London - where magic and humans have a tenuous balance.Magic has thus coated this world in white - it is bleak and monotone.

Here the people believe magic is something to be subdued and controlled. The strongest magicians rule the kingdom and royalty changes when one rules usurps another.
