This book made me laugh out loud and it pulls on your heartstrings. Just as Jesus reformed the Jewish faith by highlighting that you should focus on loving your neighbour and being a good person as opposed to following the strict rules the Pharisees were abusing, Moore reminds readers of the importance of following the core teachings of Christianity instead of focusing on the sometimes corrupt church establishment which had become exactly what it originally sought to destroy. One perfect and hilarious example in the book is how one of the changes Joshua wants to bring to his new church is removing the Jewish law against eating bacon. I have always believed that the value of religion is providing moral principles for people to follow as opposed to imposing strict rules and punishments as many people point to as a fault in religion. I thoroughly enjoyed Christopher Moore's telling of the full life of Jesus, aka Joshua, and I thought he did a wonderful job creating explanations for the events of the Gospels and tying together all the loose ends. Being published around 2003 right at the height of the Catholic Church sex scandals when many people began to question their faith, I can't think of a better text than Lamb that would have reminded people about what Christianity is all about.
